What is the difference between stainless steel, aluminum, and plastic water bottles?

Petroleum Based Plastic Bottles

For years plastic bottles have been the most commonly used container for beverage consumption. Only recently research has shown the harmful effects that drinking from certain plastic bottles can have on our health. When certain plastic bottles get too hot they can leach a chemical commonly referred to as BPA (Bisphenol A). BPA is most commonly found in Polycarbonate plastics, which are clear, almost shatter proof, and are used to make a variety of common household products.

BPA has been linked to a number of health problems including:

  • Obesity
  • Breast Cancer
  • Neurological Issues
  • Reproductive System Development
  • Prostate Development and Cancer
  • Decreased Testosterone Levels in Males

BPA has also been shown to be an environmental risk. When a plastic bottle is discarded it eventually breaks down and can leach BPA into our oceans and fresh water supplies; contaminating the water which can harm fish and other organisms over time.

Aluminum Bottles

Aluminum bottles may be lightweight and look similar to stainless steel; however, to make the beverage within the bottle drinkable they must contain a liner which may leach BPA, toxins, or other harmful chemicals when they get too hot, or come into contact with anything acidic (fruit juices).

The liners are usually made from plastic or a baked on epoxy coating, both of which can leach harmful chemicals into your beverage. Another problem arises when the bottle is cleaned, the liner can be scratched allowing the aluminum below to be exposed to the beverage. Over exposure to high levels of aluminum can cause serious health problems such as:

  • Muscle Aches
  • Weakness
  • Bone Pain
  • Speech Problems
  • Anemia

Aluminum is particularly dangerous to the nervous system, with symptoms including:

  • Mental Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Memory Loss
  • Nervousness
  • Heartburn
  • Disturbed Sleep
  • Impaired Intellect
  • Loss of Coordination
  • Flatulence

As if these health problems weren’t enough to worry about, the liners may also retain flavors, which can cause your beverage to taste funky. Yuck!

Stainless Steel Bottles

Our stainless steel Eco2o Bottle is made of only 18/8 food grade stainless steel. That’s right; it’s made from the same stainless steel that has been trusted in food preparation and manufacturing industry for years. Because it does not require a liner it is 100% BPA-Free, does not contain lead or toxins, and is ok to use with acidic beverages such as fruit juices. It also will not give your beverage a funky, chemically taste like other aluminum or plastic bottles. An Eco2o Bottle is truly a safe and eco-friendly choice for your hydration needs.

Health

Do Eco2o Bottles have BPA?

  • Absolutely NOT! The fact that our Eco2o Bottle does NOT contain BPA is one of the core reasons we started this company; to provide you with a safe, clean, and affordable option for your hydration needs.

Do Eco2o Bottles have a liner?

  • No! Unlike aluminum bottles, stainless steel bottles do not require a liner between the beverage and the outer shell. This ensures a completely safe environment within the stainless steel bottle.

Drink It Up

Can I fill the Eco2o Bottle with acidic beverages?

  • Yes! The Eco2o Bottle is 100% safe with acidic beverages (such as fruit juices).

Can I use the Eco2o Bottle to carry alcohol?

  • Yes! The Eco2o bottle is great for carrying alcohol! Make that next camping trip extra special! (Note: We do not endorse drinking alcohol while camping, or vice versa)

Functionality

Do Eco2o Bottles sweat?

  • Yes, the Eco2o Bottle can sweat when the temperature of the beverage varies greatly from the temperature outside, or if you are making it do too much cardio. The best way to deal with this is to use an insulated tote with your Eco2o Bottle.

Can I put hot liquids in my Eco2o Bottle?

  • No! We do not recommend putting hot liquids in your Eco2o Bottle. Stainless steel is a great heat conductor and you may burn yourself (or at least be very, very uncomfortable) if you try to use with hot liquids! Warm beverages may be used at your own discretion.

Can I put my Eco2o Bottle in the freezer?

  • No! We do not recommend putting your Eco2o bottle in the freezer. The force of expanding liquids may cause the bottle to break or bulge and this will void the Eco2o Lifetime Leak-Free Guarantee. Also, our research has shown it is extremely difficult to drink frozen water.

Can I put my Eco2o bottle on a camp stove?

  • We do not recommend putting the Eco2o Bottle on a stove. However, if you find yourself in an emergency situation and must boil water for safe drinking, remember to remove the lid and let the bottle cool off before attempting to handle it. It may damage the paint on the bottle, but if you are in an emergency situation this will be the least of your worries! You can also use the Eco2o Bottle as a reflective signaling device.

General Care and Cleaning

How do I clean my Eco2o Bottle?

  • Our Eco2o Bottle is made from high quality 18/8 stainless steel and is designed to be rugged and durable. Your bottle is dishwasher safe, however, not recommended as it may chip the paint on the bottle. We also recommend rinsing your bottle after running it through the dishwasher to remove any soap residue which may have been left behind.
  • For daily cleaning we recommend rinsing with warm, soapy water, and letting it dry by draining upside down in a dish rack.
  • To clean more thoroughly, we recommend using good old fashioned diluted vinegar or water and baking soda.
  • If properly cared for, you and your Eco2o bottle could enjoy a long happy life together.

Manufacturing
