Help Coming for Grand Lake St. Marys New State Rules Will Allow Control Over Manure Application (Excerpt from Green Watch, our partner, the Ohio Environmental Council’s Newsletter) “The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has finally been granted authority to deal with the root causes of the toxic water of Grand Lake St. Marys. The Ohio Environmental Council led a contingent of partner organizations that supported ODNR’s proposed rules that give the Chief of the Ohio Division of Soil and Water Conservation the authority to declare a watershed to be “In Distress.” Once this designation has been made, the Chief may require farmers to develop approved nutrient management plans for their farms, such as avoiding spreading of manure in the winter months on frozen and snow-covered ground. Keeping manure out of the streams that feed Grand Lake St. Marys is key to its recovery from the toxic blue-green algae that plagued it in 2010.” This is good news for residents of St. Mary’s Ohio and surrounding communities who have lost full use of their beloved lake due to gradually deteriorating water quality issues over the last 10-15 years. In the last 3 years alone, the problem rapidly accelerated and an outbreak of algae in May of 2009 led the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to post signs advising “Limited contact” with the water and no ingestion of it’s fish. This warning continued with the outbreak of a new toxic blue-green algae in 2010. Please keep in mind that farmers are not the only ones to blame; the shallow depth of the lake and it’s slow water cycling rate make Grand Lake St. Marys particularly susceptible to such problems. Let’s hope that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and local farmers can create a plan that will help the recovery of the lake and have little to no impact on the local farming economy.
